Checking Your Car's Fluid Levels

The best way to optimize your car’s lifetime and performance is by performing regular maintenance on all its components. Most of us know to check our tire thread, maintain correct tire pressure and conduct basic maintenance tasks such as these. But there are many other maintenance tasks that you can do yourself at home, without having to go to a mechanic. One of these tasks is checking, refilling and replacing the various liquids that are added to the system. These range from wiper fluid, to steering fluid, to engine oil; you can buy them from your local Amsoil Dealer and keep them topped up without having to pay a mechanic to do it. In this blog, your local AMSOIL Dealer – VipaSynthetics have put together a step-by-step guide to maintaining ideal fluid levels without wasting money on mechanic’s fees.

Windshield Washer Fluid

; Windshield washer fluid is what is sprayed onto your windscreen when you want to clean it. It is not essential for your car’s performance, but it very important for safety, especially when traveling in dusty conditions. Your windshield washer fluid port is located under the hood of your car. You can find out exactly where it is located by looking in your owner’s manual, or by looking for the reservoir cap that has a picture of a windshield wiper on it. Remove the cap and fill the reservoir with fresh washer fluid or plain water if you don't have any washer fluid on hand and need to fill it up before a drive.

Coolant

; Whenever you turn your engine on, it starts to produce heat. Coolant liquid is essential as it helps to disperse this heat and prevent the engine from overheating. If you do not check coolant levels regularly, it could run out, causing the engine to overheat and potentially damaging its components. The coolant reservoir is usually a clear or white plastic container that can be found near to the engine. You can assess the coolant level by looking at the side of the container (you may need to clean it first), or by removing the cap and looking inside. Make sure that your car is parked on a level surface, or it may be difficult to assess the fluid level accurately. If more coolant is required, it can be added directly to the reservoir. Another fluid that protects your motor from overheating, is engine oil. This lubricates the circuit, reducing friction and therefore reducing heat. A synthetic oil change provides the best lubrication and protection against wear. Brake Fluid

; Brake Fluid is critical for the safe running of your vehicle. Without brake fluid, you brakes can stop working completely, and the risk of an accident becomes very high. Brake fluid is stored in a reservoir similar to the coolant reservoir – it should have brake fluid’ clearly marked on the container. If not, you can consult your owner’s manual to find out exactly where it is located. Assess the level of brake fluid by either looking at the side of the container, or removing the cap, and add more if required. Brake fluid should not be consumed by your vehicle. If the level has decreased significantly since you last checked, this may indicate a leak in the system that should be investigated by a qualified mechanic.

Engine Oil

; Engine oil, also known as motor oil, conducts a number of important functions in your engine. These include lubrication and protection against corrosion. Engine oil prolongs the life of your engine and reduces the risk of a breakdown from overheating. Check your engine oil with the engine turned off and cool. You can locate the engine oil dipstick using your manual. You should remove the dipstick and wipe it clean before re-inserting it and removing it again for an accurate reading. If oil levels are low, add more to the system using a funnel. If the oil is dark in color, opaque or viscous, it needs changing. You should drain all the old oil out of the system before replacing it with a high-quality synthetic oil like Amsoil.

Boost Your Performance With a Synthetic Oil Change in Perth Amboy

Synthetic oils are designed in laboratories by scientists in order to provide superior lubrication and protection from corrosion when compared to traditional oils. They also last longer and should need to be changed less frequently, as well as perform better at a wider range of temperatures.
